When is a neutral current-carrying?

A practical framework for identifying neutral loading and adjustment-factor implications.

Classify the neutral by what current it actually carries in the specific circuit arrangement—not by color or habit.

01

Decision path

  • Identify the system: single-phase, three-phase wye, nonlinear load, or multiwire branch circuit.
  • Determine whether the neutral carries only imbalance current or also carries load current that does not cancel.
  • Identify nonlinear loads that can add harmonic current in the neutral.
02

What to verify

  • Definitions and adjustment rules in the locally adopted edition.
  • Which circuit conductors share the raceway or cable and which loads are simultaneous.
  • Whether the design has four-wire three-phase nonlinear loading or other special conditions.
03

Common mistakes

  • Counting every neutral automatically.
  • Never counting a neutral because it is grounded.
  • Evaluating raceway fill and ampacity adjustment as if they were the same rule.
04

Field documentation

  • Record system type, connected loads, conductor grouping, adopted edition, and the reason the neutral was counted or excluded.
