NEMA Enclosure Ratings
Match enclosure protection concepts to the installation environment.
Select an enclosure rating for the actual water, dust, corrosion, oil, ice, hose-down, and indoor/outdoor exposure.
Assess
- Indoor/outdoor location, washdown direction, windblown dust, corrosion, condensation, and temperature.
System
- Enclosure, hubs, drains, breathers, windows, operators, and cable entries must preserve the intended protection.
Common mistakes
- Treating a higher number as universally better.
- Drilling entries that defeat drainage or listing.
Verify
- Use manufacturer rating details and inspect every field modification, gasket, latch, and fitting.
