When is GFCI protection required?

GFCI applicability depends on occupancy, location, voltage, phase, receptacle or equipment type, and the adopted edition.
Questions to ask
- What is the occupancy and exact location?
- Is the requirement tied to a receptacle, outlet, branch circuit, or specific equipment?
- What are the voltage, phase, and ampere rating?
- Do damp, wet, rooftop, kitchen, service, dwelling, or outdoor provisions apply?
What to verify
- The adopted edition’s scope, locations, ratings, exceptions, and effective dates.
- Equipment listing and manufacturer-required protection.
- Local amendments and AHJ interpretations for replacements or existing work.
Common mistakes
- Using an older location list from memory.
- Assuming hardwired equipment is always outside the rule.
- Installing multiple protective devices without checking compatibility or troubleshooting impact.
Field check
- Test with the device’s test function, follow any required instrument test, label where required, and record the protected outlets/equipment.
