How many conductors can go in a raceway?
Separate physical fill from ampacity adjustment and installation constraints.
Raceway fill is a physical-space calculation; conductor ampacity adjustment is a separate thermal calculation.
Fill workflow
- List every conductor and cable assembly in the raceway.
- Obtain each conductor’s table area for the exact insulation/type.
- Obtain the internal area for the exact raceway type and trade size.
- Apply the permitted percentage for the conductor count and raceway condition.
Separate checks
- Current-carrying-conductor count and ampacity adjustment.
- Ambient-temperature correction.
- Bending space, pulling difficulty, conductor jamming, and manufacturer limits.
Common mistakes
- Using bare copper area instead of the insulated conductor area.
- Using EMT dimensions for another raceway.
- Applying a 40% assumption to every conductor count or nipple condition.
Document
- Record conductor types and quantities, table references, raceway type/size, occupied area, allowable area, and adopted edition.
