Troubleshooting
Breaker trips immediately
Isolate short circuits, ground faults, damaged equipment, and wiring errors safely.
Treat an immediate trip as a possible short circuit or ground fault until proven otherwise.
Immediate actions
- Do not repeatedly reset.
- De-energize, lock out, verify absence of voltage, and inspect for damage, moisture, and incorrect connections.
Isolation path
- Disconnect loads using an approved plan.
- Section the circuit and perform appropriate continuity/insulation tests with sensitive equipment isolated.
Common causes
- Phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground fault.
- Miswired equipment, damaged insulation, failed surge component, or incorrect breaker/device.
Verification
- Repair the located fault, complete insulation/continuity checks, restore covers, and energize using a controlled procedure.
