Troubleshooting

Breaker trips immediately

Isolate short circuits, ground faults, damaged equipment, and wiring errors safely.

Treat an immediate trip as a possible short circuit or ground fault until proven otherwise.

01

Immediate actions

  • Do not repeatedly reset.
  • De-energize, lock out, verify absence of voltage, and inspect for damage, moisture, and incorrect connections.
02

Isolation path

  • Disconnect loads using an approved plan.
  • Section the circuit and perform appropriate continuity/insulation tests with sensitive equipment isolated.
03

Common causes

  • Phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground fault.
  • Miswired equipment, damaged insulation, failed surge component, or incorrect breaker/device.
04

Verification

  • Repair the located fault, complete insulation/continuity checks, restore covers, and energize using a controlled procedure.
