GFCI nuisance trips

A GFCI trip indicates current imbalance; find leakage, shared return paths, moisture, wiring errors, or incompatible equipment rather than bypassing protection.

Likely causes

  • Neutral-to-ground connection downstream.
  • Shared/misrouted neutral.
  • Moisture or damaged insulation.
  • Normal equipment leakage that accumulates across loads.

Isolation

  • Unplug or disconnect loads methodically.
  • Inspect wet locations and neutral separation.
  • Test insulation only when equipment is safely isolated from damaging test voltage.

  • Replacing the GFCI before locating the leakage path.
  • Combining neutrals from different protected circuits.
  • Meggering connected electronics.
