Likely causes
- Neutral-to-ground connection downstream.
- Shared/misrouted neutral.
- Moisture or damaged insulation.
- Normal equipment leakage that accumulates across loads.
Isolation
- Unplug or disconnect loads methodically.
- Inspect wet locations and neutral separation.
- Test insulation only when equipment is safely isolated from damaging test voltage.
Common mistakes
- Replacing the GFCI before locating the leakage path.
- Combining neutrals from different protected circuits.
- Meggering connected electronics.
Verification
- Restore one load at a time, use the device test function, and document the faulted load or wiring correction.
